Jon Mitchell finishes 8th in Gumbo Nationals finale
On Friday and Saturday, Jon Mitchell and his Keyser Manufacturing Co. No. 5 Super Late Model team raced in the Mississippi Delta at Greenville Speedway. Mitchell grabbed one top-10 finish during the 19th annual Gumbo Nationals with the Mississippi State Championship Challenge Series at the quarter-mile track.
At the gumbo oval in Greenville, Mississippi, on Friday, Mitchell qualified ninth out of 27 Super Late Models entered. He started third and finished as runner-up in his heat race, putting him in the sixth spot to begin the 40-lap, $5,000-to-win feature. He ran in the top 10 early in the race, but pulled off to save his equipment near the midway point after discovering some wrong adjustments and getting hung on the outside during restarts.
With 27 Super Late Models at the track on Saturday, Mitchell qualified fifth. He slipped from second to fourth in his heat, then rolled off 11th to start the $10,000-to-win main event. He picked up three positions in the 50-lapper and finished eighth.
